Chill Out: Top Tips To Stop Worrying

By Joel Colman

The steps to end worrying can sometimes be a paradox. Sure, there is "something" causing the worry, but if you are already in an anxious state, there's no way you can take care of the problems that are worrying you. The best thing to do is to ground and center yourself to a place, so the paradox is you actually have to stop worrying first, and then, take care the problems that are causing you to worry. Here are some ideas to get yourself in the groove first that will help you tackle the problems afterwards.

Stop Watching The News

I know a lot of us don't like the idea of being in the dark from the world news. But really, what are you going to miss? There's always a fire, a flood and war going on somewhere. This is the human history of Earth. These things will never change, at least not very soon. So, is it worth stressing yourself out about a burning school somewhere that you'll never get to? Is it better just for a local fire company to know about it? Some voluntary ignorance can really help the state of mind. It's better to focus on the finer things of life. The real important things that happened in the news, I guarantee you, you will hear by word-of-mouth anyway, so you won't really miss out on anything "important." Just try it for a few days and observe how much better your sleep will be.

Do Nothing

Our modern world with our toys and gadgets prove an unlimited supply of distractions to avoid our problems and our life. Yet with all this busy-ness we sometimes forget to observe life, observe the self and experience a world we are in. Much older philosophies like the Tao and Zen teach how to center and let go. Just taking an hour to yourself for watching a sunrise or sunset, watching a natural body of water, observing clouds float by a mountain, or just watching a sunbeam dance on house plant in your apartment. It might be the best hour of your whole day. This in itself will make your previous problem much smaller and easier to deal with.

Stay Active

On the flipside, sometimes stress comes from too much time by yourself. Sometimes it's nice to go out and randomly do something nice for somebody. Or just do something for the sake of anything if you find that you're getting too much idle time. Things I like to do are jogging for about twenty minutes or have some sort of workout. Going out to the coffee shop and reading a book there instead of staying at home. If you feel yourself slowing down and listening to your thoughts too much, definitely going out with people even if they are strangers at a coffee shop or doing something or anything can help.

Be Creative

It can be overwhelming to have to deal with one problem after another without a break. Sometimes giving back to this world with a song or a painting or even just whistling a tune can make you feel more a part of it, than being controlled by it. It's great to recharge your batteries by expressing yourself through some sort of creativity. This will help you feel more inspired about life and motivated to handle the problems that are keeping you from the stress-free life that you want and deserve to live.

Converse With Others

Talking out a problem with someone who just simply listens to your woes is usually the best medicine for fighting worries. The problem can sound a lot less troublesome or even downright silly once said out loud to someone else. Sometimes they'll have a simple solution for it, or sometimes it will be as simple as hearing someone say "you don't need to worry about that." Sometimes that's all it takes to calm your mind to be able to find a solution for your stress.

It's an unfortunate conundrum that worry is the real cause of worry. To stop worrying in the future is to stop worrying now. Being able to calm yourself and devise a plan with the clear focus mind, is the best way to get rid of anxiety and the causes of it. Follow these ideas and you will be much closer to eliminating stress anxiety and worry from your life permanently.
